A night trip in Malacca, Malaysia

Exploring Malacca,
Malaysia

January 12, 2019

As I read before that Malaysia has two oldest cities, the other one is the city that we have visited before, Georgetown in Penang, and the other one is Malacca. The city that located in Malacca straits, the stretch of water between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, Indonesia. Throughout the city's history, it has passed hands between Portuguese, Dutch and British. Each of these nations in turn had a significant influence in the culture, architecture, and development of Malacca.

Not so many people know about Malacca, old and small yet beautiful city located between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. That makes me and my travelling partner decided to stopping by at this city, for a night, after we explored Penang and Kuala Lumpur a week before. Feels like it's a shame that we don't spend others city in Malaysia like Malacca but we already exploring another city in Malaysia.

Trust me a day or a night visiting Malacca is well worth it.

How to get to Malacca
_____________________

Melaka or in English called Malacca, located in southern city of Kuala Lumpur, and also located between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur with destination time about 2 hours by bus, either from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. We took bus from central station in Kuala Lumpur since we stayed there before.

Here of some taking bus steps from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca.
1. From Central Station in Kuala Lumpur, using KTM line train with final destination to Seremban station, in platform 5. And then get down to Bandar Tasik Selatan Train station to go to TBS or Terminal Bersepadu Sealatan.

2. Walk in to TBS by connecting bridge and reach main lobby TBS to find ticket counter that sell to all destination. The ticket price about 12 RM.
Note : choose the closest time so you don't have to wait. And better avoid the crowd in weekend.

3. Arrived at Melaka sentral bus station, wait for the bus to the Jonker street or Red house by the number code of the bus. The ticket about 2 RM.
Note : Panorama bus in platform 17 about 30 to 45 minutes to come in.

The total time of destination was about 3.5 hours including the waiting time and traffic jam.

Where to stay

I told my travel partner that I have visited Malacca before, only for couple hours and that wasn't enough for me then she agreed to stayed for a night and booked hotel to explore the city further. We were staying at Imperial Heritage Hotel which only 5 minutes walking from red house. What a surprise !! We didn't expected before the hotel was quite fancy with the price under 30 usd.

The room was stunning with a big window and the city view. I don't know why, sometimes I love the city view because I can see the crowd of the road and luckily there is a big mall right infront of my window, which is I don't have to worry about food and morning coffee.

What to do in Malacca
_____________________

We arrived around 3 pm and it was SO HOT though we get used to hot weather. But we don't want to wasting time just staying at room instead, so we decided to explore another places, by walking.
Yeah by walking !!

Exploring Jonker Street
Told my travel partner that exploring Jonker street and taking some photos at it, is really worth to do. Found out that is not only Heritage and some old beautiful of architecture buildings with peranakan style are good to captured but the street is really well managed so we could enjoyed the view. So Jonker street is like a long street packed full of a variety of vendors from food to clothes to local fare. Unfortunately we started to explore around 5 pm which a lot of places already closed.

By the end we picked up some local gift with Malacca pictures on it, and of course took a lot of photos with randomly pose as usual. Hahaha

Jonker Main Street

Walking through houses in peranakan style

Exploring Jonker street by walking and seeing the peranakan style of architecture building is a must to do while in Malacca. Not gonna lie, this was my favorite things to do !

Eating some local traditional food
Every travel is not going to complete without trying local foods. And the weather was really hot so instead of eating a meal, we need something to pouring our throat with sweet and watery also lots of ice. A bowl of Ice kacang Malacca with Brown sugar and sour mango sliced on top from famous cafe Jonker 88 was the good choice.

There are variety of culinary from Malacca but again we were late to explore there, so no wonder that some restaurants along Jonker street are already closed.

Chasing sunrise in Masjid Selat Melaka
Not only old house and unesco heritage building, Malacca also has a beautiful modern building. Masjid Selat Melaka, the beautiful mosque that floated on the sea. We woke up in early morning, when the sun still hiding and called grab taxi to drove me there. With our swollen face because we just slept like 2 hours before, yeah we were too busy searching and arranging our next destination.

But it's good you know, chasing sunrise from another side of country. What a moment !!

At the end we found out that we couldn't found any taxi or another transportation to take us back to the hotel, because we were too early.

Imagine we don't have any energy to walk and our hotel about 45 minutes away by walking. Congratulations to us ?!
Have to say that this is the highlight of our traveling. Being dumb after another dumbness.

Visiting museum
Malacca has many museums and galleries, unfortunately we didn't have a chance get in to one of them because of the limited time. But I took photos of the museums that might you want to know. At least I captured the building with the name as well.

The location of the museums still around the red house area.

Exploring Red House and UNESCO world Heritage
The famous and most of the visited place in Malacca is Dutch Square or people known it as Red House, because it matches the colour which is dominated by red. This place also is one of my favourite place, it is not just about the colour but I love the architecture style. Especially from the church building, the oldest building in Malacca.

Dutch Square is the old town square that surrounded by important buildings in the Dutch era, such as stadthuys city hall which used to be the Dutch governor's building. A little history, Dutch square or known as Red square during the Dutch colonial era was the downtown area of the colonial government.

Not only christ church that most people take it as a background of every traveller photo, there are several places that probably you can visit, nearby Dutch square or Red house.

Riverside Walk Malacca River
After all of activities which are need effort, riverside walk is a good choice to chilling. The water is not as clear as others river's country but for me it's a lovely spot to wander down. There is a heap of street art around there which is lovely to look out for when having a stroll.

Overall Malacca was a great place to stopping by before we get back to Penang again. We really enjoyed seeing somewhere a bit different and experiencing a new side to Malaysia. If you plan to visiting Malaysia, don't forget to put Malacca on your destination. Even it's just a day trip going to feel worth it. You'll have plenty of time to see all the major sites in one day.

So, have you ever been to Malaysia before ?

See ya in the next writing :)

Love, Yundha
